Savings and Investment Accounts
Best Current CD Rates
Because of the illiquidity of CDs (certificates of deposit), we don't recommend them for more one year or longer. Investopedia has a list of the banks with the best current interest rates on CDs: https://www.investopedia.com/best-cd-rates-4770214
Best High-Yield Savings Accounts (HYSA)
- Western Alliance Bank- One of the highest interest rates in the industry (4.10% as of October 2025).
- American Express- Great for those who also want savings, checking, high-yield savings, and/or credit card accounts all in one place (3.50% as of October 2025).
- Etrade- Great for those who want an HYSA that integrates seamlessly with investment accounts (3.75% as of October 2025).
Best Stock and Options Brokers
We use several brokers to trade stocks and options. Here is a list of our favourites and why:
- TastyTrade- Best for anyone who wants to trade and monitor their investments on a regular basis. The computer platform is faster and easier to navigate than other brokers' platforms, and their commissions are extremely low for high-volume traders. Limited to Iindividual, joint, entity, and retirement accounts (cannot do HSAs or custodial accounts).
- Etrade- Great for the "buy-and-hold" investor and less active options traders. Offers a wide range of account types (including custodial accounts for children) and multiple trading platforms.
- Schwab- Best for those who want all of their money in one place. They offer savings, checking, and investing accounts, and you can move your money around freely between those accounts.
- Fidelity- Similar to Etrade in terms of what they offer, but they also do HSAs, something that Etrade does not do (see below).
Best Health Savings Account (HSA)
Many banks offer their own HSA, but they usually have low rates of return. If you are simply looking for a low-risk HSA, check with a bank or credit union that you already trust. If you want full control over your money and want to target a higher rate of return by investing directly in the stock market, we recommend Fidelity as it is one of the only brokers that offers an HSA with this ability: Open Account with Fidelity
Best 529 Plan
Every state offers its own 529 plan, but you don't have to choose the 529 plan from your state. If you want more flexibility to choose an aggressive plan with a good track record of following the stock market indexes, open an account with the New York 529: https://www.nysaves.org/
